In February, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) unveiled its bi-annual realignment of districts. Schools statewide were shuffled between districts, and in many cases, between classifications, depending on if their enrolment was increasing or decreasing. The realignment process begins in October when, on a date specified by the UIL, each school district sends in a “snapshot” of high school enrolment. This snapshot is simply a count of students currently enrolled. The UIL takes the enrolment numbers and begins separating the school districts into classifications, beginning with 5A. The UIL attempts to keep 245 schools in the 5A classification. When the smallest 5A enrolment number is set (the bottom of the 5A classification), the UIL directors move to 4A, and set the 4A enrolment numbers, and so on down the classification ladder through 1A six man. This year’s classification numbers are as follows:
5A 2065 membership and above 245 schools
4A 990 to 2064 membership range 246 schools
3A 430 to 989 membership range 190 schools
2A 200 to 429 membership range 229 schools
1A 199 and below membership 382 basketball schools
167 Eleven-Man Football Schools
130 Six-Man Football Schools
Bandera’s new district is District 26AAA. This district is for Volleyball, Football, Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Field, Baseball, Softball, Golf and Tennis. Soccer will again have to compete in a 4A district to be named later. Powerlifting competes at a regional level.
District 26AAA consists of the following schools:
Bandera
Boerne High School (not Boerne Champion)
Fredericksburg
Fischer Canyon Lake
Geronimo Navarro (moved up from 2A)
San Antonio Hawkins (will compete in everything except football)
Wimberley
Unfortunately, there are problems that arise when the number of schools competing in the football district differs from those competing in the volleyball district. Our football district will have 6 members, while the volleyball district will have 7 members. Due to the different number of schools competing in Football and Volleyball, the two schedules will not be aligned on Friday nights during district play. We have had this dilemma before, and we will work to provide an equitable solution for our volleyball girls that are cheerleaders, in the band or in the Star Steppers.
District 26AAA is a competitive district from top to bottom in every sport. Our athlete’s will have an opportunity to shine against great competition week in and week out in all sports. I am excited about the chance for our athletes to compete against some great talent and coaching in all sports during district play. Another plus to the new realignment is that there will be no bye in the first round of the playoffs. Any momentum that is picked up during district play will be carried directly into the playoffs.
